Urban papercraft: Marshall Alexander

There are really some great dutch papertoy designers, and Marshall Alexander is one of them!

Limi-Ted

Marshall Alexander is, like me, one of the designers that are invited to contribute to the book made by Matt Hawkins (read more) and proud and active member of Nice Paper Toys!

Marshall is one of the most modest people that I know, but I don’t have to be….
He thought that he needed some practice, so before he launched his own papertoy series (Foldskool heroes) he created a series of custom:
A Hedkase by NiceBunny:
Om mani
A SIZZA by Nick Knite:
Supa-catcha-Sizza1
A Speakerdog by Ben the Illustrator
Bark to the Future Speakerdog

And some of his own papermodels:
toxicmyk
Retrobot

And after that I found his thing: the one piece papertoy…
I like this one very much:projectfatchunk
projectfatchunk
and it’s on a postcard!!!

And then he decided that he had practiced enough: and started with the amazing Foldskool heroes series:
Foldskool series 1
I must confess that I didn’t took the time to download the Foldskool template when Marshall published it…. But when I did, I wanted to create one: the template is really very smartly constructed.

Foldskool series 2

A little quote from Marshall’s site:

… aiming to make money doing what I liked to do best: graphic design and illustration. So currently I work as a graphic designer at a small company in The Netherlands and spend my spare time illustrating my childhood memories and designing papertoys. Enjoy!

I’m glad that I’m created a beautiful Foldskool heroes Batmobile, because his reaction was Nukk:
Marshall did a Drukk-custom, which I really love:
Nukk a Marshall Alexander custom
Nukk is really the bomb.

New homepage for Drukk, Selfish Series and Pusher Series

For the more observed reader of my blog might have noticed a extra menu item: Drukk and as the title of this post suggest it’s the new home of Drukk, the Selfish Series and the Pusher Series.

So for my rss readers I have a little image:

New homepage for Drukk, Selfish Series and Pusher Series
New homepage for Drukk, Selfish Series and Pusher Series

On this page you can find two series…. one is the Selfish Series and the other is the Pusher Series.

The Selfish Series is designed by me, and they are created to show you what is possible with Drukk (it’s not only easy to create a custom-skin but also easy to customize!)
The Pusher Series (Designers on Drukks) is a slot-series….
???wtf is that???
Every Pusher Series has 6 slots, when all slots are filled I will start with a new Selfish Series and open the next Pusher Series.

Do you want to participate in Pusher Series 1, this is still possible: get the blank Drukk template and start designing.
Four slots are already filled by other designers: Marko Zubak with Robbox, Marshall Alexander with Nukk, Nick Knite (SIZZA) with Speed racurr and Scott Carrington aka Dr Shazam with Dead Drukk.

But if you’re not that creative this page is also for you! Both series can be download there, so happy building…

Headers broken again: sIFR update

My Flash rendered headers didn’t work after my host transferred my site to another server.
Well in retrospect it’s easy to blame it on the host (sorry guys), but the fault was/is simpler.

I had this problem before : firefox and sifr dont play nice, and just as last time I blamed the wrong person again: not my host but the new Flash Player version 10 killed my sIFR headers…

That would explain why I see my headers at home but not at my work (I didn’t upgrade to Flash Player 10 at home).

The solution is very simple: visit http://novemberborn.net/sifr/2.0.7 and download the latest version of sifr (2.0.7).

Find your sIFR javascript file and check if it’s 2.0.5 or higher:

If you are upgrading from sIFR 2.0.5 or 2.0.6, you must upgrade the sifr.js JavaScript file.

and overwrite it…

And that’s it.
So do you recognize this situation: update the Flash Player recently/ your sIFR headers work on one computer but not on another/ sIFR works in IE and not in Firefox (or the other way around)/ Flash headers are now html headers …. update your sIFR!

For the people that don’t know sIFR:

sIFR is meant to replace short passages of plain browser text with text rendered in your typeface of choice, regardless of whether or not your users have that font installed on their systems. It accomplishes this by using a combination of JavaScript, CSS, and Flash, which renders the font. It degrades gracefully if Flash is not present. sIFR 3 is open source and licensed under the CC-GNU LGPL.

And I use the WordPress plugin CG-FlashyTitles.

Grumm by Petra: Pink Grumm

Another Grumm custom: this time by my girlfriend…

Petra van Breugel designed a Grumm in her favorite color: pink. And that simple reason is also the base for it’s name: Pink Grumm 🙂

I’ve been experimenting with Sketchup, but you can see that I not finished with the Grumm 3D model but it has not the same impact as an picture…
If you can send me a better picture, your picture/credits will be use instead!

Server problems – part 2

Update #1: my bad… I accused my host that my headers didn’t work anymore, but it’s something different (the sIFR file needed updating).

My host has moved my website to another server.
First you couldn’t even find my website, that problem was fixed…
But the last couple of days people mentioned that my site only worked on the homepage but when they searched, selected a category or even skip to older post my website freezes (a server timeout)…

Fist I thought it was something that I did (so I upgrade WordPress to be sure) but after a little mail to my host they fixed it.

The only thing not working is my headers (they are now html instead of flash-headers)…
Oh well, the site doesn’t freezes and it is usable/ readable…

Once again, my apologies if you visited my website, and it didn’t work. 😉

Grumm by Enkeling: Grummeling – part 2

I have mentioned before that a friend of mine made a Grumm.

But for some reason I never made a download link… So this is a post about that: and some reminder for this Grumm.

Symen Veenstra aka Enkeling is a very talented illustrator and a good friend. We both went to the same art academy where we both studied graphic design …. (he is now an illustrator and I’m a Flash developer/designer 🙂 )

He called this Grumm: Grummeling

(You can use freeware like FilZip or 7zip to extract a .ZIP-file and read a .PDF with Acrobat or Foxit)

When I started with Grumm I thought it would be cool to see all sides of Grumm and see the complete design. So I made a rotation viewer. But because it’s a lot of work creating a rotation I stopped doing that. Symen is the last one I made one for.

Custom papertoy: Flowerr Kidd

Another custom (this is the first time I do this and probably the last) for Wilson the Robot from Eric Wiryanata.

This is a reaction to the custom Eric did (Zombie Grumm).
I explained in my previous post (Custom papertoy: Wilsumm/) why there are two customs:

  1. usually I create a skin in Illustrator
  2. print/build the model
  3. see what needs improvements
  4. fix it in the Illustrator
  5. print/build the model again

This time I used the same method, but after I saw what improvements I needed to make (3), I also concluded that I’m creating the same “bad-ass” skin over-and-over again.
So I created a new skin (yes, a sweet pink one) and made the improvements in that model and rebuild that model.

Today I present: Flowerr Kidd

Flowerr Kidd: a custom by Matthijs Kamstra

The .ZIP file contains a .PDF
(You can use freeware like FilZip or 7zip to extract a .ZIP-file and read a .PDF with Acrobat or Foxit)

This model is not complex to build, but if you need some help building the basic Wilson visit the instruction page (at the bottom of the page), but my customization you just need to analyze my photos.

Wilson is a “doodle” (Eric used this to describe his model) papercraft and some parts don’t work like I want them to (the feet for example).
My version doesn’t need duct tape to keep him standing: just put some weight in the feet before you glue it shut! (I used dry rice, but nuts/bolds, dry sand, putty, coins, etc will work just fine)

Server problems

Sorry, all I can say.

Since Saturday my host is trying to move my site from one server to another.
Not everything is going as it suppose to go (Murphy’s law).

So if you visited my site and it’s wasn’t here (hmmm: you will never read this then) or takes really long to load: I’m sorry about this.
Luckily is my site is up again (from Monday :: with some glitches here and there), but my email, and ftp (only my problem… 🙁 ) is not working as it should.
